Four Things Homeowners Should Look For After the Rain

Sky After Rain Storm

It's hard to believe that after all the rain we received last weekend, we are in store for even more rain this week. For homeowners in the Asheville area, it is important to perform routine checks for excess moisture and mold in and around your home. In this article, we are providing a short checklist of four things for which homeowners should look after the rain:

1) Check Underneath Your Home (Basement, Crawlspace, Etc)

Standing water in your basement, crawlspace, or underneath your home creates an environment conducive for mold and mildew. Mold and mildew can develop within 48 hours when moisture is present.

In addition to harmful mold, moisture can cause cracks can develop in your foundation and steps. If you notice moisture and standing water underneath your home, consider calling a professional as soon as possible to address any drainage issues on your property.

2) Check Your Roof and Gutters for Damage and Debris

Your gutters are the key to channeling water away from your roof to appropriate drainage channels, away from your foundation. If your gutters are clogged or damaged, it can lead to water damage, and of course mold development. Make sure your gutters are free of dirt and debris. If you find excess rust or leaks, have your gutters repaired or replaced.

Roof damage can lead to water issues throughout your home. Water may penetrate through damaged shingles, through your attic, and into your walls and flooring. If you notice moisture in your roof, missing shingles, or any sign of water damage in your attic, have your roof repaired or replaced as soon as possible.

3) Check Your Windows and Window Sills

When the humidity is high, does condensation develop on your windows and window sills. Believe it or not, mold can develop as a result of that moisture. If you see moisture on your sills, make sure you dry them as soon as possible. Further, you may need to repair or replace your windows.

4) Check Your Yard and Property

Lingering standing water on your property creates an environment conducive for mosquitoes, as well as mold and mildew. Address drainage issues on your property with a professional.
